How do law firms track Google Ads leads to signed cases?

Capture the click id, phone and email at intake, keep them on the CRM matter, and send qualified, consulted and signed milestones to Google Ads. On one law firm account I manage, only about 15% of paid calls carried a click id, so phone matching had to cover the rest. Send a value per matter type, never matter details.

I’m a marketer, not a lawyer, and nothing here is legal advice. What your firm may send to Google or a vendor is a question for your ethics counsel. Below is the tracking setup I use on law firm accounts.

Why the call isn’t the conversion

Google Ads learns from whatever the firm tells it a conversion is. On most law firm accounts that’s a call over a minute or a form submission. Both measure contact. Smart Bidding then buys the cheapest contact it can find, which is often a caller with a question the firm doesn’t handle.

The signed case happens days or weeks later, inside a practice management system Google never reads. Getting it back into Google Ads is what lets the bidding favor cases over calls. The general mechanism is on importing closed deals as offline conversions. The rest of this page covers the parts specific to a firm.

What to capture at intake

Three identifiers, stored on the lead and kept with the matter when it opens:

  • The Google click id (GCLID). A hidden form field picks it up from the landing page URL. For calls, a call-tracking platform with dynamic number insertion ties the call to the click.
  • The phone number, in full international format.
  • The email address, if the prospect gives one.

The click id alone isn’t enough. On one call-first law firm account I manage, only about 15 percent of paid calls carried a click id. For the other calls, the phone number and call time, matched through enhanced conversions, are the route back to Google.

Send milestones, not only the signed case

Google sets hard windows. A conversion keyed to a click id can be uploaded up to 90 days after the click. Enhanced conversions for leads, which match on hashed email or phone, allow 63 days. Many matters sign later than that.

So send the funnel in stages:

  1. Qualified lead. The intake team, or a call score, confirms a prospective client with a matter the firm takes. This lands within days and is what Smart Bidding should optimize toward.
  2. Consultation held. A second action, reported but not bid on.
  3. Signed case. Uploaded when it happens, if it’s still inside the window. It’s the number you report to the partners, even when it arrives too late to train the bidding.

When a qualified lead turns out not to be, Google lets you retract or restate it. Bidding uses adjustments uploaded within seven days, and the outer limit is 54 days.

Put a value on each matter type

To Google, a contract review and a lawsuit are worth the same unless the call carries a value. Give each matter type a value from the firm’s own fee data, and send it with the qualified-lead conversion. Then switch the campaign to Maximize Conversion Value, and the bidding starts favoring the larger matters.

On the account in the case study, the firm priced its own work in three tiers, and the scoring system wrote that price onto 132 qualified leads in the call-tracking platform in its first backfill pass. Rejected calls carried no value, and repeat callers counted once a month. Those values are the firm’s own price list on scored calls, kept in the call-tracking platform. The case study doesn’t claim any bidding use or result from them.

If you do send values, check that they keep arriving. Compare the count of qualified leads with the count carrying a value every month, because a qualified lead with no value set reaches Google worth nothing.

What the vendor documentation shows as of October 2026:

SystemCaptures the click idSends to Google Ads
LawmaticsYes, automaticallyThrough Zapier or a webhook plus your own code, not a native send
Clio GrowNot documented by ClioZapier templates exist for Clio; check whether they reach Grow and how they handle the click id
Filevine, LitifyNo native Google Ads integration documentedMiddleware or a custom build
CallRailYes, through its tracking scriptNative integration for calls and forms with a click id
WhatConvertsYesSends leads marked quotable, with a sales or quote value

In practice, the call-tracking platform often does the sending, because that’s where the calls and values already live. The CRM’s job is to tell it which leads qualified and which signed.

What changed in 2026

Two changes matter if someone is building this now. From June 15, 2026, the Google Ads API stopped accepting offline conversion and enhanced-conversions-for-leads uploads from developer tokens that hadn’t sent any between December 2025 and June 2026, and Google points those workflows to the Data Manager API. Google also now describes offline conversion import as a legacy feature and recommends enhanced conversions for leads as the starting point.

Integrations that were uploading before the cutoff keep API access for now, though Google recommends moving them to the Data Manager API. A firm commissioning a new custom build should confirm the developer is using the current path.

What never to send

Prospective clients are covered by the same confidentiality duty as clients (ABA Model Rules 1.6 and 1.18). Talk to counsel before any client data leaves the firm. In the setups I build, Google receives a click id or a hashed phone or email, a timestamp, a conversion name and a number:

  • No matter descriptions, and no case types in conversion action names. “Qualified lead, tier 2” rather than “Divorce consult”.
  • No notes or transcripts. The value is the only thing that needs to travel.
  • No client lists for targeting if you handle criminal defense or divorce. Google treats criminal defense and divorce as sensitive categories and doesn’t allow audiences built from the advertiser’s own lists for them. Check the current policy for any practice area that deals with hardship, such as bankruptcy.

Once signed cases come back, the partners can track cost per signed case. How to set that target is on what a law firm should pay per signed case.

When to bring me in

Bring me in when the account reports leads that never sign, when intake can’t tell you which calls came from ads, or when cost per signed case keeps rising.
