Meta Ads CPM by placement: what 18 accounts paid.
Across 18 Meta ad accounts I manage, the pooled CPM from 1 July to 30 September 2026 was $6.03, and the median account paid $6.56 per thousand impressions (N = 18). Facebook Feed took 31.7% of Q3 2026 Meta spend across the 18 accounts, at a $7.74 CPM and a 1.26% link click-through rate (N = 18). Facebook Marketplace ran a $2.80 CPM with a 0.27% link CTR in Q3 2026 (N = 12), so a link click cost $1.04 there against $0.61 in Facebook Feed (N = 18). In Q3 2026, Meta ad sets optimized for reach or impressions paid a $2.88 CPM for a 0.06% link CTR, while conversion-optimized ad sets paid $20.35 for 2.84% (N = 6 and N = 9).

The sample is 15 local advertisers and 3 DTC ecommerce brands, all from my own book. The local side is home services, healthcare, a nonprofit, community events, an auto dealer, a restaurant and one local awareness advertiser. Method and exclusions sit near the bottom.
- $6.03 Pooled CPM, every placement (N = 18)
- 0.27% Marketplace link CTR (N = 12), against 1.26% in Feed (N = 18)
- 9 of 18 Accounts optimizing for no conversion event, 42% of spend (N = 18)
- $89.33 Median website cost per lead (N = 6)
All four figures cover 1 July to 30 September 2026. The cost-per-lead tile counts only the 6 accounts that optimized for a website lead event. Three of those 6 are flagged as unverified further down.
01 CPM and link CTR by placement · N = 18
Feed carried a third.
Stories cost the most of the big eight.
Pooled CPM weights every account by its spend. The median weights every account equally, so a single big spender can't drag it. Where the two disagree, read the median as the typical account and the pooled figure as where the money went.

Window 1 July to 30 September 2026. Medians count only accounts with 1,000 or more impressions in that placement, which is why the median N can sit below the spend N. "All other placements" pools profile feed, notifications, the right column, business discovery, Messenger stories, Instagram explore and search, and impressions Meta left unattributed.
Reels and Reels overlay are two products
Meta's breakdown reports a facebook_reels position and a separate facebook_reels_overlay position. I kept them apart. Full-screen Reels ads cost $8.19 per thousand pooled at a 2.13% link CTR (N = 18). Overlay ads, which sit on top of other people's reels, cost $3.66 at 1.11% (N = 13). Merged, they read as one $7.20 placement (N = 18), which describes neither.
Facebook Stories was the most expensive of the eight placements carrying more than 3% of spend, at $34.68 pooled and a $27.30 per-account median (N = 17 with spend, N = 10 for the median). It also posted the highest link CTR of those eight, at 4.19%. Facebook Feed was the only placement carrying more than 30% of spend, at 31.7%, and every account bought it (N = 18).
02 By optimization goal · N = 18
Cheap impressions,
almost no clicks.
In this sample CPM tracked the ad set's goal more closely than the industry. Reach and impression ad sets bought inventory at $2.88 per thousand and returned a 0.06% link CTR (N = 6). Conversion-optimized ad sets paid $20.35 and returned 2.84% (N = 9). That's about 46 times the click rate for about 7 times the CPM.
| Optimization goal | N accounts | Share of spend | Pooled CPM | Pooled link CTR | Cost per link click | Median account CPM | Middle half of accounts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Conversion event, all | 9 | 51.4% | $20.35 | 2.84% | $0.72 | $22.15 | $17.02 to $23.48 |
| Landing page views | 5 | 12.5% | $8.37 | 2.36% | $0.36 | $8.71 | $7.26 to $11.15 |
| Link clicks | 5 | 14.7% | $2.80 | 1.50% | $0.19 | $4.97 | Withheld at N = 5 |
| Reach | 5 | 14.6% | $3.11 | 0.06% | $5.13 | $2.99 | $2.86 to $3.28 |
| Impressions | 1 | 5.0% | $2.38 | 0.06% | $3.85 | N = 1 | One account |
| Reach and impressions combined | 6 | 19.6% | $2.88 | 0.06% | $4.73 | $2.93 | $2.50 to $3.21 |
Window 1 July to 30 September 2026. An account appears in every goal row it spent on, so the N column sums past 18. Indented rows are subsets or combinations of the rows above them. One ecommerce account also ran a small video-view ad set. At N = 1 on an ecommerce account it would publish a per-account figure, so it's withheld. The link-click quartiles are withheld too, because at N = 5 they fall on single ecommerce accounts.
9 of 18 accounts never asked for a lead
Nine accounts, carrying 42.2% of Q3 spend, optimized only for reach, impressions, link clicks or landing page views (N = 18). None of their ad sets told Meta what a customer looks like. That list covers a home-services contractor, an auto dealer, a restaurant, three healthcare or nonprofit health advertisers, two community events and one local awareness advertiser.
The sharpest case is one account, N = 1. A primary care account whose campaign asked people to book an appointment was set to optimize for reach. It reached a lot of people at a $3.58 CPM and produced a 0.04% link CTR. Per link click that came to $9.45.
Reach has a job. An event that sells out on awareness, or a restaurant that wants the neighborhood to see the new menu, can live on it. A business that needs a booked call can't, and the table shows why: reach and impression ad sets bought link clicks at $4.73 pooled, against $0.72 on conversion ad sets (N = 6 and N = 9).
03 Facebook Marketplace · N = 12
Where reach budgets
end up.
12 of 18 accounts spent on Marketplace in Q3 2026, and it took 10.8% of all spend. Its pooled CPM was $2.80. Its pooled link CTR was 0.27%, against 1.26% in Facebook Feed (N = 12 and N = 18). Per account the gap holds: a 0.31% median on Marketplace (N = 8 with 1,000+ impressions) against 0.80% in Feed (N = 18).
92.8% of all Marketplace spend came from the 9 accounts with no conversion goal (N = 9). It took 87.6% of one reach-only awareness account's spend, 48.0% of an auto dealer's and 31.2% of a restaurant's (N = 1 each). When an ad set asks for the cheapest reach, Meta finds it here, and the account pays for it in clicks.
If you're asking whether Marketplace ads are worth it: for a reach goal it's the cheapest placement in the table after Search results. For anything that needs a person to tap through to your site, a Marketplace click cost $1.04 in Q3 against $0.61 in Feed (N = 12 and N = 18).
04 Audience Network · N = 8, rewarded video N = 6
A 13.85% click rate
is a warning.
Audience Network rewarded video posted a 13.85% link CTR at a $39.07 CPM across 6 accounts in Q3 2026, about 11 times Facebook Feed's 1.26% (N = 6 and N = 18). Per account it ran from 7.51% to 26.19%, with an 11.39% median among the 5 accounts with 1,000 or more rewarded-video impressions (N = 5).
-
8 of 18
accounts had Audience Network delivery in Q3 2026, one of them only a trace. It took 18.5% of all spend across the sample (N = 18).
-
3
accounts ran about 91% of their spend there: a healthcare awareness account, a roofer and a painter. Together they took 79.3% of all Audience Network spend (N = 3).
-
3 of 3
of those accounts were the only ones where Meta reported more link clicks than total clicks. A subset can't be larger than the whole it belongs to (N = 18).
Rewarded video runs inside mobile apps and games. The person watching wants the extra life or the coins, and the ad stands between them and it. A tap meant to close or skip can land on the ad. That traffic shows up as a strong click rate and a cheap click: $0.28 per link click on rewarded video, the second cheapest in the table (N = 6). A roofing homeowner comparing quotes behaves nothing like that.
Some of those clicks may be real people. The click rate still can't be read as interest. For lead generation I exclude Audience Network unless the leads it sends get checked against booked work. The ad fraud explainer covers how invalid traffic shows up in a bill.
05 Website cost per lead · N = 6
The cheapest leads are
the least verified.
Six accounts optimized for a website lead event in Q3 2026. All six used a website conversion: a contact, a scheduled appointment or a pixel Lead. None used Meta's instant forms. The median cost per lead was $89.33, and the range ran from $22.85 to $422.71 (N = 6).
| Account | Business | N | Optimized event | Audience Network share of spend | Cost per lead | Read |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| M14 | Painting | 1 | Website contact | 91.5% | $22.85 | Unverified |
| M12 | HVAC | 1 | Website schedule | 43.9% | $29.73 | Unverified |
| M4 | Lawn care and pest control | 1 | Website contact | 0% | $89.02 | Under 10% Audience Network |
| M9 | Roofing | 1 | Website contact | 91.0% | $89.64 | Unverified |
| M8 | Wellness clinic | 1 | Website schedule | 0% | $187.65 | Under 10% Audience Network |
| M10 | Flooring and countertops | 1 | Website pixel Lead | 7.5% | $422.71 | Under 10% Audience Network |
| Median | All six | 6 | $89.33 | Range $22.85 to $422.71 |
Window 1 July to 30 September 2026. Cost per lead is the cost of the conversion-optimized ad sets divided by the event they optimized for, as Meta's API reported it. On the roofing account that excludes a small landing-page-view ad set. "Unverified" marks accounts with 40% or more of spend on Audience Network.
Split by Audience Network share
$29.73 vs $187.65
Median cost per lead, 40%+ Audience Network against under 10% (N = 3 each)
The two cheapest accounts, painting at $22.85 and HVAC at $29.73, put 91.5% and 43.9% of spend on Audience Network (N = 1 each). The roofing account at $89.64 put 91.0% there (N = 1). The three accounts with less than 10% on Audience Network posted $89.02, $187.65 and $422.71 (N = 1 each). Split that way, the medians are $29.73 and $187.65 (N = 3 each).
The ad platform can't show which group's leads turned into paying jobs. That lives in the CRM. The cheap end of this range sits on the same inventory that produced a 13.85% click rate (N = 6), so I audit it before I trust it. The Lead Quality library walks through how I check a lead count against booked work.
06 Frequency and spread · N = 18
The gap inside one account
can beat the whole sample.
Median frequency over the 92 days was 3.2 impressions per person reached (N = 18). The middle half of accounts sat between 2.70 and 4.40, and the highest was 16.92. The 16.92 is the healthcare awareness account with 91.1% of spend on Audience Network (N = 1).
Across all six lead accounts, the most expensive lead cost 18.5 times the cheapest (N = 6). Inside the painting account alone, one ad set's contacts cost 20.2 times another's: $18.54 against $373.95 (N = 1). The lawn care and pest control account split 9.3 times: $45.66 against $425.04 (N = 1). The expensive side of both splits is a thin read, and most of the painting account's delivery ran on Audience Network, so treat both as directional.
An industry benchmark tells you whether your account sits in a normal band. The segment split inside it tells you where the next dollar goes.
The 3 DTC brands are inside every pooled row and every 18-account median above. None of them gets a row or a range of its own.
07 Quotable findings

Each one names its window and its N, so it survives being quoted out of context. Please link back to this page when you use one.
- The pooled Meta CPM across 18 local and DTC ad accounts was $6.03 in Q3 2026, and the median account paid $6.56 (N = 18).
- Facebook Marketplace returned a 0.27% link CTR in Q3 2026 against 1.26% in Facebook Feed, so its $2.80 CPM bought link clicks at $1.04 each against $0.61 in Feed (N = 12 and N = 18).
- In Q3 2026, Meta ad sets optimized for reach or impressions bought impressions at a $2.88 pooled CPM and returned a 0.06% link CTR, while conversion-optimized ad sets paid $20.35 and drew 2.84%, about 46 times the click rate (N = 6 and N = 9).
- 9 of 18 Meta accounts, carrying 42% of spend, optimized for no conversion event at all in Q3 2026 (N = 18).
- Audience Network rewarded video posted a 13.85% link CTR at a $39.07 CPM in Q3 2026, about 11 times Facebook Feed’s 1.26% (N = 6 and N = 18).
- The median website cost per lead on Meta across 6 local lead-gen accounts was $89.33 in Q3 2026, ranging from $22.85 to $422.71, and none of the 6 used instant forms (N = 6).
- In Q3 2026, Meta lead accounts with 40% or more of spend on Audience Network posted a median $29.73 website cost per lead against $187.65 for accounts under 10%, and the cheaper group is the unverified one (N = 3 each).
- Median Meta frequency over the 92 days of Q3 2026 was 3.2 impressions per person reached (N = 18).
08 Method
How the numbers
were built.
Source and window
Every figure comes from Meta Marketing API reads on ad accounts I manage, pulled read-only. Nothing was written to any account. The window is fixed at 1 July to 30 September 2026, 92 days, and the next edition covers Q4 2026. Placement figures use Meta's publisher platform and platform position breakdown. Goal figures use each ad set's optimization goal.
Inclusion and exclusion
- Spend floor. An account needed at least $300 of spend inside the window. All 18 cleared it, so none was dropped on volume.
- Tracking. Accounts with broken tracking get flagged and left out of cost-per-lead figures, but still count in the tracking findings. In this edition no lead account had a dead event. Three lead accounts had 40% or more of spend on Audience Network, so their cost per lead is published with an "unverified" flag rather than dropped, and the median split above shows both groups.
- Cost per lead covers only the 6 accounts whose ad sets optimized for a website lead event. The 9 accounts with no conversion goal have no cost per lead, because there's no optimized lead to divide by.
- Ecommerce. The 3 DTC accounts count in every pooled row and every 18-account median. Nothing is published per account, not even a range.
- Accounts without a row. Some accounts belong to clients I name elsewhere on this site. They count in every median and total here, but I don't show them as their own row, because a row would publish a named client's numbers. On this page that's the 3 DTC brands.
- Descriptors. One awareness account's vertical couldn't be confirmed from its own data, so it's labelled a local awareness advertiser and nothing more.
Definitions
- CPM. Cost per thousand impressions.
- Link CTR. Link clicks divided by impressions. Meta's link click count, not its all-clicks count, which includes likes and profile taps.
- Cost per link click. Spend divided by link clicks for that row.
- Lead. The website event the ad set optimized for: a contact, a scheduled appointment or a pixel Lead, as Meta's API reported it. It counts a tracked event. Booked jobs live in the CRM.
- Conversion-optimized. An ad set whose goal was an offsite conversion event. On the ecommerce side that includes add-to-cart and purchase events.
- Pooled. Sum of spend over sum of impressions or clicks across every account in the row. Spend-weighted.
- Median. The middle account, each account weighted equally. "Middle half" is the first to third quartile, by linear interpolation, published where N is 4 or more. Placement medians count only accounts with 1,000 or more impressions in that placement. Quartiles are withheld where they would fall on a single ecommerce account.
The sample, per account
N = 1 on every row. That's 15 rows for 18 accounts: the three ecommerce accounts count in every figure above but don't get a row. An asterisk marks an account where Meta reported more link clicks than all clicks.

The same rows, plus the placement and goal tables, are in the CSV. Spend, impressions and conversion counts are left out of both, because any one of them next to a unit price gives back an account's spend.
